David Blaine explains how he held his breath for 17 mins
We've all seen David Blaine perform his insane magic tricks and high-profile feats of endurance infront of a live audience on TV. In April last year, Blaine appeared on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show to break the the Guinness World Record for oxygen assisted static apnea. He broke it alright, by holding his breath underwater for 17 minutes!
In this TEDMED video, he describes how he held his breath for so long.
"I kept pushing to 10 minutes," he says. "At 10 minutes you start getting all these really strong tingling sensations in your fingers and toes. And I knew that that was blood shunting, when the blood rushes away from your extremities to provide oxygen to your vital organs. At 11 minutes I started feeling throbbing sensations in my legs, and my lips started to feel really strange."
Don't try this at home!
